  • My English teacher wanted us to write an article on something recent, such as an event or something we like.

Well, Misfits is both for me. I've only known this British comedy-drama for... Hum... One week ? And I'm already ADDICTED to it.

The plot seems is simple and not really interesting : five young people meet each other because they have to do their community service programme and after a huge storm, they get a superpower linked with their personality. Easy, right ? But after watching the first episode, you get used to it... You want to know their powers and what's going to happen because of course, the climax of suspense is already intense at the end of the first episode... (and you now, you just want to know what they dare to do... haha)

As a series, you get used to it indeed : the characters are so different because of their lives - and in that way maybe you can find yourself - but also because of the humour which is often present thanks to Nathan, the beautiful boy (yep, he is, but girls, he's already mine.) and who makes fun of everyone, thus he has to cope with some strange events which are actually really, really, funny.

And I have to say that the actors are really good, contrary to those in the US series, here they've been chosen for their talent and not their looks. In short, even if this series is considered as a fantastic one, nearly everything is described with a lot of realism.  Moreover, the music is sooooooooo good!!!

It reminds me a bit another British series, Skins, and I hope it will be as famous as this one. (but it's bound to be.)

So, since you want to improve your English and since watching films or series is fine, I really advise you  to watch it. (and you will listen to a regional accent thanks to Kelly.)

  • On Wednesday October 20th,  crazy Lady Gaga  cancelled her two concerts in Paris on October 22nd and 23rd.

What  sad news for her fans who had been waiting for her for  months !

The fans had learnt late in the night that their favourite singer had cancelled her shows because of the strike against the retirement reform which paralysed the transport and caused a shortage of oil in the country.

But don't worry for the fans, Lady gaga apologized on december 19th and 20th, (finally one of the concerts was postponed again until the 21st...) and they didn't have to buy a new ticket. Nevertheless was  everybody  able to come ?

What about you ? Were you  at Lady Gaga's concert in Bercy on December 20th or 21st ? Or did you finally sell your tickets?

  • An incredible collection of 170 paintings of Claude Monet is displayed at the Grand Palais till january 24th.

A museum doesn't sound like the place to be for the majority of students,

but this exhibition is great and I recommend it to everybody.

You can check some of the paintings and the schedule on this nice website:

  • PART ONE - A REVIEW

Well folks, here it is, the highly anticipated, much talked-about first part of what has turned out to be the most successful movie franchise of the past decade. I myself joined the Harry Potter frenzy right after having seen the first film nine years ago, when I bought the first 4 novels and devoured them one after the other. Then, like any other fan, I waited impatiently each year for the next book… And I didn't particularly love the last novel : the rhythm, the overlong explanations at the end… So I was skeptical, to say the least, when I heard that it was being adapted into two films. My fear grew when I heard that the director, David Yates, was  to remain at the helm after having shot what I consider as the two weakest films of the franchise: "The Order of the Phoenix" and "The Half-Blood Prince" (book that I absolutely love).
    So what is the verdict?

Bloomin' brilliant! For the first time we can actually get to know our main characters and relate to what they are going through. Loved ones dying, friends angry at one another, a feeling of abandonment… the whole symbolically representing what coming-of-age is all about : the loss of innocence. Beautifully shot in some of England's most striking landscapes, most notably around Malham, at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the director managed to skillfully blend both the epic and the intimate while maintaining a sense of the spectacular.

Fans of the book will be delighted to see how much material is featured while appreciating the filmic choices that come with every major screen adaptation. On a more personal note, while it is still a delight to see most of Britain's top actors in one film, kudos must go to Rupert Grint who gives Ron Weasley more depth in this film than his cast mates Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson managed to achieve in the whole series. His ruggedness only emphasizes his sensitivity and brings real warmth to the story.  Two thumbs up for the brilliant dance sequence between Harry and Hermione - off-beat, clumsy, unexpected - it is a touching moment which gives a profoundly humane aspect to the whole film while summing up the beautiful complicity these actors have on and off-screen.

So there you have it my dear Muggles. Use your nearest Portkey or travel via the Flu network to the Opera and prepare to lose yourself for two and half hours of movie magic!

  •  December1st, was international AIDS day

What about the evolution of the VIH virus nowadays ?

For the first time since 2004, the number of new AIDS victims has increased last year.

Over 5 million people are ill (HIV positive), and 1/3 are not aware of being ill !

What about progress in screening ?

Screening must be done as early as possible, in order to be able to have efficient cares. According to several doctors, rapid screening is better thant the classic one : this is progress. Why ? Because generalized screening allows us to have a prompt diagnosis : a patient knows if he is ill in a few minutes. On the contrary, diagnoses in classic screening, are obtained a week later and people are often afraid of being victims of AIDS, so they refuse to know the diagnosis, which can be very dangerous : if they are ill, they mustn't wait too long to get some treatment.

What do people think about this new kind of screening ?

People agree with this even if to inform someone that he has AIDS or is HIV posibive is a difficult thing. Today, thanks to a fast coverage care, death is not fatality anymore. So now, it's "easier" to announce and... to hear.
